Mitsubishi and Accurite Bring SuperDisk LS-120 Technology to All PCMCIA-Compatible Notebook Computers

TRAVEL 120 Drive Enables Millions of Notebook Users to Take Advantage of Superior and Reliable SuperDisk Mass Storage

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 1998-- SuperDisk™ consortium member Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc., together with Accurite Technologies Inc., today announced the availability of the TRAVEL 120™ PCMCIA SuperDisk™ LS-120 drive.

The TRAVEL 120 is an external drive, based on Mitsubishi's slimline SuperDisk drive for notebook personal computers, with a Type II ATAPI Interface Card (PCMCIA card) that plugs into any Type II or III PC Card slot.

With a formatted disk capacity of 120 Mbytes as well as backwards compatibility with traditional 3.5-inch diskettes, notebook owners can use one drive for both standard and high-capacity storage. For computers that rely on an external floppy drive, the TRAVEL 120 can replace the existing drive, providing high-capacity storage with no additional hardware or weight to carry around.

"Until now, users of older notebook computers were unable to take advantage of the superior storage capabilities of SuperDisk products," said Elizabeth Dessuge, Vice President of Marketing at Accurite Technologies.

"Considerably faster than any parallel port drive solutions, the PCMCIA design of the TRAVEL 120 also makes it the first truly mobile product to allow SuperDisk technology to be used by anyone with a PCMCIA-compatible subnotebook or notebook computer. Consequently, TRAVEL 120 provides SuperDisk storage capacity and ease of use to approximately 40 million notebook users."

Comfortably fitting inside a coat or jacket pocket, the TRAVEL 120 measures 0.67 inches (height) x 4.0 inches (width) x 6.1 inches (depth) and weighs only 10 ounces. It is compatible with Windows(R) 95, Windows 3.X and DOS operating systems. No additional energy source is required for most notebook computers because the TRAVEL 120 is powered directly through the PC Card interface of the notebook. Very low-powered notebooks can use an optional AC adapter, or a PS/2 keyboard connector.

"It is very important to Mitsubishi Electric and the rest of the SuperDisk consortium that SuperDisk technology is available to as many users as possible," said Norm Hairston, Senior Marketing Manager for disk-drive storage products at Mitsubishi Electronics America. "With its PCMCIA experience, Accurite has helped create an exceptional product that the enormous customer base of notebook users can rely upon."

About the SuperDisk LS-120 Drive and SuperDisk Technology

SuperDisk drives are available in the standard 25.4-mm (one-inch) form factor for desktop personal computers, as well as the standard 12.7 mm (half-inch) slimline version for notebook PCs. All SuperDisk drives are backward-compatible, allowing users to read from and write to their existing 3.5-inch floppies.

The SuperDisk diskette has the same shape and size as the standard 1.44-Mbyte 3.5-inch diskette, yet allows users to store up to 120 Mbytes of data. The SuperDisk technology is supported by major media, drive and computer manufacturers including: Accurite Technologies, Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi-Maxell Ltd., Imation, Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics Industries Ltd. (MKE), Mitsubishi Electric Corp., NEC, OR Technology, Siemens-Nixdorf AG, Fujitsu ICL Computer Ltd., and others.
